Mell was born in 1954 in Montclair, N.J. He is the seventh of nine children raised by a single mom who worked as a domestic and cared for her children. Mell became an activist in high school when he organized his classmates to raise funds to create a teen activity center at a local Salvation Army center. After graduating from high school, Mell studied business and earned a B.S. degree in 1976 from Rider University in Lawrenceville, a suburb of Trenton, N.J.

Mell taught High School for two years in Jersey City, NJ, focusing on business subjects. He then moved to the corporate arena where he worked in various sales management and marketing positions with Johnson & Johnson, Mobil Chemical, Coca Cola and General Electric. After relocating to Chicago, Mell founded and is the principal owner of Execusearch, a search firm specializing in finding career opportunities for African-Americans, Latinos, women and members of other groups that are historically underrepresented in management and professional jobs. In his 15 years with Execusearch, Mell has placed more than 200 professionals with companies such as Apple Inc., SBC Ameritech, Microsoft and Sun Microsystems.
