Personal Background
Mell, and his wife Angie, live in Bronzeville, and have lived there
for 5 years, after moving from the South Loop. Mell describes Angie
as" his rock, with whom everything is possible". They
have lived on the Southside for over 9 years.
Mell was born in 1954 in Montclair, N.J. He is the seventh of nine children raised by a single
mom who worked as a domestic and cared for her children. Mell became an activist in high school
when he organized his classmates to raise funds to create a teen activity center at a local Salvation
Army center. After graduating from high school, Mell studied business and earned a B.S. degree
in 1976 from Rider University in Lawrenceville, a suburb of Trenton, N.J.
Mell taught High School for two years in Jersey City, NJ, focusing on business subjects. He
then moved to the corporate arena where he worked in various sales management and
marketing positions with Johnson & Johnson, Mobil Chemical, Coca Cola and General Electric. After relocating to Chicago, Mell founded and is the principal owner of Execusearch, a
search firm specializing in finding career opportunities for African-Americans, Latinos, women
and members of other groups that are historically underrepresented in management
and professional jobs. In his 15 years with Execusearch, Mell has placed more than 200
professionals with companies such as Apple Inc., SBC Ameritech, Microsoft and Sun Microsystems.
Selected as a
Local School Council board member for the Douglas/Pershing School, 3200 S. Calumet, and was a
co-founder of the South Loop Education Alliance. He is a member of the National Fatherhood
Initiative.
